Some Great Things About Gel Manicures
Ladies, do you remember accompanying your mom to the nail salon when you were younger? Do you notice the way that her hands would move more gracefully doing everyday things like writing you a note for school, floating from point to point during a conversation, tap dancing on the keys of the keyboard? Did you notice how every outfit seemed to look fresher and more put together, as if those beautifully manicured nails were the final piece?
This Type of Manicure is for YOU
I certainly remember. I also remember my first manicure and how downright womanly I felt exiting the salon. I also remember the painful few days it took for each nail to pop off, one by one. I remember how much less beautiful my natural nails looked afterwords. It made me feel like I needed to go back to the salon and get another set just to cover them up. And so I did, over and over for about a year. And the damage that I was trying to cover just got worse and worse. So I found a solution.
In today’s modern world of glitz and glam, beauty doesn’t have to mean pain anymore. You can have all the glam of freshly manicured nails without all the damage. This isn’t your momma’s manicure anymore ladies. There are several great options for nails nowadays, but I have to admit that my personal favorite is gel nails.
If you’ve never heard of a gel manicure before, I will explain. First it should be noted that what I am about to describe is the traditional gel manicure and not Shellac or some other such system. This is the most common type of manicure that you will receive when you walk in to your local salon and ask for “gel.”
The nail tech will gently hand-file (that is, without the use of an electric file) rough the nails up just a bit so that the gel will adhere better. No more than 3-5 strokes of the emery board should be necessary.
Next, the tech will take out a clean brush and a pot of gel and “paint on,” if you will, the nail. In this way, you can get a manicure that is tailored specifically to your natural nail and have it shaped to your liking. There should be about two coats of gel to each nail. Each coat should be applied in a fine layer, so as not to be too thick and burn the nail under the L.E.D light. Then, your nails will be placed underneath the L.E.D. light to complete the adhesion process. Finally, if you desire a color, it will be painted on and must dry like regular polish on your natural nails.

Now I would like to add a few notes about gel nails. If you choose french manicure over clear, your nails will be more likely to chip. Also, when removing gel nails, it is usually only necessary to file the nail just enough to break the seal. Then, cotton balls dipped in acetone should be wrapped with foil to each individual nail and left to sit for a few minutes. The nail should remove easily, with the rare “tough spot” being removed with a cuticle pusher.
